About Mardi Gras 2026
Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is a carnival celebration famous for its elaborate parades, colorful costumes, masks, and beads. While celebrated in many places worldwide, New Orleans hosts the most famous American Mardi Gras festivities.
The celebration marks the last day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. In New Orleans, the carnival season actually begins on January 6 (Epiphany) and culminates on Mardi Gras day with spectacular parades by krewes (carnival organizations).
Traditional Mardi Gras colors are purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power). The celebration features king cakes, jazz music, Cajun food, and the famous cry of "Throw me something, mister!" as parade-goers catch beads and trinkets.
